Kiburg Castle

Schloss Kyburg, 8314 Kiburg, Switzerland

Description:

Kiburg Castle is a well-preserved example of a medieval castle. Founded in the XI century, the castle is a monument of architecture and history, witnessing important events in the history of the country.

The first mention of the castle dates back to 1027, when it belonged to the Kiburg family, one of the branches of the Dillingen family. After the death of the last representative of the Kiburgs, it passed into the possession of the Habsburgs and belonged to them until the coup in 1798. After the coup, the castle changed several owners and in 1917 became the possession of the canton of Zurich. Since then, the buildings of the castle, including the main tower, palace, knight's palace and chapel have the status of a museum.

The museum houses expositions dedicated to the way of life of counts. It will be interesting to visit the section of the museum dedicated to the castle kitchen, where you can see nuts, beans and cereals, which are 800 years old.

It is also worth mentioning the castle chapel, where frescoes of the XV century with scenes of the Last Judgment are preserved.
