Mount Eiger
Switzerland, Berne Alps, Canton of Bern.
Description:
Eiger is a mountain located in Switzerland, in the Bernese Alps, in the canton of Bern. Its absolute height is 3.970 meters above sea level.
The mountain protrudes from the central ridge of the Bernese Alps and, together with the peaks of Mönch and Jungfrau, forms a trio that stands out from the surrounding landscape.
Eiger is mentioned for the first time in historical documents of 1252. On August 11, 1858, the summit was first conquered by Grindelwald conductors Peter Boren and Christian Almer with their guest, the Irishman Charles Barrington.
The Eiger lies in a southwest and northeast direction and is shaped like a horn. Above the Grindelwald Grund valley, the mountain rises 3,000 meters. There is often bad weather coming from the northwest.
The top is made of limestone, it is a rather dangerous place due to frequent collapses, avalanches and rockfalls, partly caused by the melting glacier. Despite all this, the mountain, and especially the northeastern ridge, became a favorite place for climbers.
The territory of Eiger is completely covered with ice and includes more than 20 routes. The Jungfrau railway also passes through the mountain.
This peak can be seen in films such as 2008’s The North Wall and 1975’s Eiger Sanction.
