Mount Finsterarhorn

Switzerland, Berne Alps, border of the cantons of Valais and Bern.

Description:

Finsterarhorn is the highest peak of the Bernese Alps and the canton of Bern in Switzerland. Outside the main ridge, it also became the highest point of the Alps, its height is 4.274 meters.

The mountain is part of the Jungfrau-Alech-Bichhorn region and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Finsterarhorn is surrounded by uninhabited glaciers, so its territory is quite difficult to access. To the west is the Fischer glacier, to the east - the Great Arsk glacier, and to the north - the Lower Grindelwald glacier.

From the north, the mountain is surrounded by the peaks of Lauterarchhorn and Schreckhorn, from the east - Oberarchhorn, and from the west - Big Vannenhorn, Gross Fischerhorn and Grünhorn.

The summit separates the basins of the Rhine and Rhone rivers and is located on the border of the cantons of Valais and Bern. It is composed of amphibolites and is the highest point of the Aar massif, the tectonic rise of which occurred about 6,000,000 years ago.

On August 10, 1829, Finsterarhorn was first conquered by J. Waren and J. Leithold, although the first ascent remained the subject of incessant disputes for many years.
