Castle Walrus
Description:
In 1286, the castle was built by Duke Louis of Savoy, hoping to protect himself from the bishops of Geneva. The impressive view of the castle is surrounded by a moat. From 1536 to 1798 the castle was the residence of the Berne governors.
Now there are 4 museums in the building, which are interesting: the Historical Museum - in this museum 8,000 toy soldiers lined up for the parade and the Museum of military uniforms and weapons.
Castle Walrus stands south of the city square shape is square, and from the corners is equipped with round towers one of them is larger than the remaining three. Walrus Castle looked like Yverdon Castle, the builders were inspired by the image of Yverdon. Outside the castle, on the lake side, there is a fortified kitchen. By Swiss standards, it is unusual that the kitchen is outside the main protective perimeter. In 1363, the kitchen was rebuilt later a fire platform and observation deck were built on the roof of the kitchen.
Walrus Castle became a target for numerous attackers, not all attacks could be sustained. In 1475, the attackers looted the castle of Morges, and in 1530 the fortress fell again. In 1536, Bern took power, and in 1539 the castle became the center of the local ballea. The castle was not in the best shape at that time and the new owners already in the 16th century undertook restructuring. The redevelopment was dictated not only by the poor condition of the fortress, but also by the fact that the castle was not suitable for defense with modern guns.
In 1803, the castle became an armory, in 1836-1839 there was a series of repairs (and was expanded). In 1871, an explosion occurred in the fortress, which caused serious damage to the castle.
