Clock Bridge
Morgartenstrasse 4, Kapellbrucke, Lucerne, Switzerland
Description:
Capelbrücke is one of the main attractions of Lucerne. The length of the bridge today is 204 meters.
The bridge over the Royce River once served as part of Lucerne's defensive fortifications. Kappelbrücke connects the old and new parts of the city. At the middle of the bridge rises the stone tower Wasserturm, which served as a watchtower to protect Lucerne from the river. From the tower signal lights warning of danger, and it served as a water tower and fire tower. After the tower Vasserturm was a dungeon, treasury, archive. Now there is an Artillery Association and a gift shop.
At the beginning of the XVII century, 111 paintings were placed under the roof of the bridge, telling about significant moments in the history of Switzerland. In 1993, Kapelbrücke was badly damaged in a fire, which was allegedly caused by an unextinguished cigarette. Most of the bridge was destroyed, 78 paintings were destroyed, but soon almost all of it was restored, and in 1994 the bridge was reopened.
