Sproerbrücke (Bridge of Dumpster)

Sproerbrücke, Lucerne, Switzerland

Description:

Sproerbrücke is a beautiful bridge built in 1408. It suffered during a flood in the XVI century, because of which it had to be restored.

Sproerbrücke is slightly younger than the other famous bridge of Lucerne - Capelbrücke, but, nevertheless, it is also one of the oldest covered wooden bridges in Europe.

Under the roof of Sproerbrücke you can see the famous plot of the Middle Ages – the Dance of Death, namely a series of paintings created by the artist Kaspar Meglinger. The general idea of the paintings, which depict scenes involving people from different walks of life, and in each of which there is death, is that all people are equal in the face of death, and no one can escape it.

In 1568, a small chapel was built near the bridge, consecrated in the name of the Virgin Mary.
