Benedictine Monastery of St. George

Northeast Switzerland, Stein am Rhine

Description:

This ancient monastery was founded in the tenth century by the wife of the Swabian Duke of Bukhart. Educated spouses who did not have children decided to raise young men from noble families.

The center of education, education and science in those days were monasteries, and that is why a monastery basilica was erected on the banks of the Rhine. About 20 novices were trained here. As a result of the Reformation in the XVI century, the monastery was abolished, and the castle in which it was located was resold many times, until finally it was owned by Ferdinand von Veter, who in 1926 created a museum here.

In the halls of the castle there are many sculptures, old furniture, the walls are decorated with wood carvings. Tourists can see many interesting exhibits - a geocentric model of the world, used before Copernicus, wooden medallions with elements of mysticism, on an ancient fireplace - bas-reliefs of seven earthly virtues, on the altar - surprisingly beautiful old frescoes. For over 1,000 years, this Romanesque basilica has delighted visitors with its harmony.
