St. Peter's Cathedral

Rue du Soleil-Levant 5, 1204 Geneve, Switzerland

Description:

One of the main architectural attractions of Geneva is St. Peter's Cathedral. The construction of the temple began in 1160 and lasted about 150 years. Initially, the building acquired Romanesque features, which over time were supplemented by some Gothic elements. In 1406, the chapel of the Maccovees was completed to the monastery, in 1441 the northern part of the nave was severely damaged and rebuilt only by 1449. In the middle of the XVIII century to the Cathedral of St. Peter was completed a beautiful facade, made in the style of classicism. The modern cathedral combines most European architectural styles.

It should be noted that St. Peter’s Cathedral is one of the first temples of Calvinism, since 1535 it is a reformatory one, this is reflected in the strict architecture of new elements of the structure. One of the main exhibits here is the chair of Calvin, a famous French reformer. Not far from the monastery is the Archaeological Museum, which contains stones extracted from the foundation of the temple of the XI century. Every year, St. Peter’s Cathedral attracts many tourists from all over the world, having visited here, you will get a lot of unforgettable impressions.
