Church of St. eliana
Description:
In the third most important Syrian city of Homs is the Church of St. Eliana. From other churches, it is distinguished by the special beauty of the interior decoration and age - this church was founded in 432 on the burial place of the Christian martyr Elian (Julian of Emes), a native of Homs, a healer.
Now the remains of the saint are in the sarcophagus in a small chapel to the right of the main building. In 1969, the church of St. Elian was reconstructed. During construction work under the layer of old plaster were found wall paintings, which are believed to date back to the 12th century, and possibly to an earlier period. The frescoes depicting Jesus, the Mother of God, saints, prophets and scenes from the life of the Martyr Elian amaze with the richness of colors and finely painted small details.
The church of St. Elian is still in service. During the riots in Syria in 2011-2012 in the area of the church there were hostilities, outside the walls of the temple were slightly damaged, the interior was not damaged.
