The Monastery of St. Georgia
Syria, Homs, Tal-Kalah district
Description:
The monastery of St. George Al-Humayr is located near the city of Homs, in the so-called Alley of Christians (Tal-Kalakh district). It was built in the 6th century, presumably by Emperor Justinian, on an ancient Roman road connecting Homs and Palmyra with the coastal cities. In this monastery were located on vacation pilgrims going from Europe to Jerusalem, there is even a charter of the Caliph of Omar, exempting the monastery of St. George from taxes and confirming its immunity for local authorities.
Initially, the cells of the monks were located in a cave, above the cave was an “old” church. Later (in the 12th century), the monastery underwent reconstruction, a second church was built, now it is called the “new”. Of interest are the original icons of Byzantine writing of the 18th century in the old church and the carved wooden iconostasis in the new. In the sacristy of the monastery, unique church utensils of different historical periods are presented for inspection.
2 times a year (on religious holidays) pilgrims are accepted in the monastery, for which 55 rooms are equipped. At the monastery there is a spiritual seminary.
