Al-Marqab Castle

Tartus, Syria

Description:

Al-Marqab Castle (Margat) literally translates as the Watchtower. The building is located 30 kilometers north of Tartus. A giant black castle sits on top of an extinct volcano. It is believed that the fortress was built in 1062 by Muslims. Since then, the castle has repeatedly changed its owners.

In the XII-XIII centuries, the castle was expanded and strengthened, which made the fortress one of the strongest fortresses and absolutely impregnable.

A visit to the fortress is a must for a serious traveler or archaeologist in Syria. The view from the top of the castle is breathtaking. Near the castle there is a restaurant, and on top there is a cafe where you can smoke a hookah.

Inside the castle completely recreated the atmosphere of ancient times. Walking through the spacious rooms of the castle and looking at the castle chapels, you are mentally transported to the XII century.
