Agora Shopping Square
Description:
The Agora Shopping Square is the central square of Palmyra, which served as a market and city meeting place.
The square has the shape of a rectangle and is surrounded by porticoes. A podium was erected on the square, from which speakers reported on recent events and read out decrees. Here, representatives of the Senate disclosed their decisions to the people.
Agora is surrounded by various structures. For example, one building with thick walls is considered a caravanserai. Near the square was found a stele, the famous "Palmyra Tariff", which contains inscriptions in Greek and Aramaic about the taxes and tariffs that the Senate adopted. Now the stele plate is located in the State Hermitage of St. Petersburg.
