Gothic Castle Devin (Bratislava)
Murá nská, 84110 Deví n, Slovenská republika
Description:
Slavic settlements appeared here only a few centuries later. By decree of one of the princes, a city was built on the ruins of a Roman fortress, the name of which, Devin, was first mentioned in the chronicles of 864.
During its long existence, the castle changed owners several times, gradually turning into a mighty fortress. But like many military installations, Devin lost its strategic value and gradually began to beggar. The castle was finally resolved by Napoleon's troops. In the first half of the XIX century, during the heyday of Slovak nationalism, there was a revival of Devin. It was made a point of patriotic pilgrimages.
But the castle was not always open to visitors. During the Soviet era in Slovakia, excursions were undesirable. The fact is that the castle is too close to the border of Austria and one Slovak calmly flew to it on a hang glider, jumping off the wall.
Today, the castle is once again popular for country walks, as a few years ago it was restored. The greatest attention of tourists is attracted by the remains of the Roman fortress and the historical exposition in the reconstructed palace wing. At the foot of the castle lies a wine-making village of the same name, in which there are several restaurants, cellars and beer.
