Fishing Gate
Rybá rska brá na, 81101 Bratislava - Star Mesto-Star Mesto, Slovakia
Description:
The fishing gate is located in Bratislava. This is one of the four defensive gates of the city (in addition to them there were also Mikhailovsky, Vydritsky and Laurentsky gates).
Fishing gates are the smallest and the youngest. They were built, presumably, in the middle of the XIV century. This gate connected the city with the suburbs, which were inhabited by artisans, fishermen, butchers. They used the gates to bring their goods into the city. In 1529, during the Turkish invasion, the gates were walled up, leaving only a small pass for pedestrians. The gate was planned to be restored in 1717, but it was finally restored only in 1754-1756. During the reign of Maria Theresa, the gates were renamed Teresian, and in 1776 were demolished on her orders.
The remains of the gate were discovered in 1990.
