St. Michael's Chapel
Slovakia, Košice, Hlavn ná mestie 2/3
Description:
The Chapel of St. Michael is located near the famous St. Elizabeth Cathedral. The history of this shrine is quite ancient, and began in the XIV century with the construction of a small cemetery chapel, which was named in honor of St. Michael - the patron saint of citizens.
In the chapel crypt is an ossarium - a repository for the remains of those who were buried in the cemetery. They were moved there to make room for new burials in the cemetery. In the walls of the chapel built medieval tombs to protect them from looting. Burials in and around the temple were stopped several centuries ago. Now the chapel is surrounded by a beautiful park, which is wonderful for evening walks.
In the XVII century, the national temple of the townspeople was temporarily a chapel. Today, its entrance is decorated with the ancient coat of arms of Košice. On the altar of the chapel you can see a fresco in which Archangel Michael fights a dragon.
The chapel has a shade of Gothic architectural style, as indicated by the island roof of the shrine and its tower.
