Description:
The Cathedral of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is one of the largest churches in Slovakia. It was built in the middle of the XI century in the name of St. Michael, and in the middle of the XIII century was re-consecrated in honor of the patroness of Kosice Elizabeth of Hungary. From 1378 to 1508, a long reconstruction of the building took place in several stages, which created the cathedral in its modern form. Throughout the XIX century, the temple repeatedly suffered from devastating fires, after which several restoration works were followed by the Hungarian specialist Wenre Steinl. The restoration was finally completed in 2009.
The Cathedral of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is made in Gothic style. The height of the sacred building is 60 meters, and the width is 36 meters. It is crowned by the Sigismund tower 59 meters high, which was built in the XVI century. The cathedral is decorated with stone carvings, namely, its southern and northern portals.
The first thing that attracts attention in the interior of the building is the Gothic main altar with a picturesque altar image, recognized as a masterpiece of the XVI century. Its dimensions are 12.6 by 8.1 meters. There are 48 paintings divided into three parts: The Life of St. Elizabeth, the Passion of Christ and Christmas Events. In addition to the altar, the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is decorated with Gothic frescoes and architectural decoration of side chapels.
