The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rozhnyav

Betliarska 92/3, Roznava, Slovakia

Description:

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Rozhnyava is the Catholic Church of Slovakia and the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rozhnyava. The sacred building was built in 1304 as the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but already at the junction of the XV and XVI centuries it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, fundamentally changing its appearance.

After perestroika, the church passed into the possession of local Lutherans - representatives of the Protestant movement in Christianity, but this did not last long. In 1776, under the order of the Holy See, the diocese of Rozhnyava was created, after which the church became its cathedral.

The building was rebuilt in the late Baroque style. The church until the XIX century existed without a bell tower, but after some time the missing part of the building was completed. Today the Cathedral is in good condition, it is crowned by a tower with bells, the domes on which have the shape of the same bell in gray colors. The interior decoration is created by icons placed on the walls of the sacred building.
