Golich Castle

Zamocka 319, 908 51 Holic, Slovakia

Description:

Golic Castle, located in the Slovak city of Golic, on the border with the Czech Republic, has a long history. The first building on this site appeared in the XI - XII centuries, as evidenced by the mention in documents from 1256. In the XIV century, Golić Castle belonged to Matus Cak, the uncrowned ruler of western and central Slovakia, who rebuilt it to his liking. The wall with bastions was built around the main building, presumably in the XVI-XVII centuries.

The most famous owners of Golich Castle were members of the Austrian imperial family, to which it belonged from 1736 to 1919. For a long time Empress Maria Theresa lived in the castle, for whom it served as a summer residence. It was during these years that the castle acquired modern Baroque architecture. The main building is a three-storey U-shaped mansion with a red tiled roof, surrounded by a massive wall and moats. The facade of the building is decorated with architectural reliefs. In 1919, the building and the area around the castle became the property of the Czechoslovak Republic. In 1970, the Ministry of Culture of Slovakia included Golić Castle in the list of national monuments. Restoration work is currently underway here, the castle is closed to the public.
