Statehood Day of Slovenia

Flag of SloveniaOn this day in 1991, the Slovenian parliament declared the independence of Slovenia and its withdrawal from Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia did not recognize independence and introduced troops as well as reinforced police forces. On June 27, the Ten Day War began. Slovenia is lucky that the war for independence ended so quickly and with relatively few casualties compared to other Balkan republics.

In addition to Statehood Day, Slovenia has Independence and Unity Day, which is celebrated on December 26. These days, solemn meetings and folk festivals are held throughout the country.
