Independence and Unity Day of Slovenia
Description:
When asked whether Slovenia should be a sovereign and independent state, about 95% of citizens who took part in the referendum said yes. In total, 93.2% of citizens (who have the right to vote) voted. Thus, about 88.5% of all citizens of Slovenia voted for independence of their country.
Slovenia officially seceded from Yugoslavia and began to exist as an independent state.
Until September 2005, the holiday was called “Independence Day”, but with the adoption of a new law on holidays and non-working days, the name was supplemented by the word “unity”, since in those days the Slovenes showed an unprecedented measure of national unity in their history.
Throughout the country on this day are held solemn rallies and festivities.
