Day of Reunification of Prekmurje Slovenes with Mother People

Description:

Gate of the castle in Murskaya Sobot
Prekmurje is a region located in the northeast of modern Slovenia. The name itself speaks for itself – these are lands located along the Mura River. The center of the region is the ancient city of Murska Sobota, which for several centuries together with the whole of Prekmurje was part of the Hungarian Kingdom. After the Battle of Mohács (1526), Hungary, together with Prekmurje, passed into the possession of the Habsburgs. In May 1919, after the proclamation of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, the creation of the Mursk Sobot Soviet Republic was announced, which lasted only six days.

As a result of the Paris Peace Conference and under pressure from General Meister (see para. "Rudolph Meister Day"On 17 August 1919, the military authorities handed over authority to the civilian Yugoslav authorities. This event was met with great enthusiasm by the Slovenes of Murska Sobota and the surrounding villages gathered on the town square.

Taking into account the importance of these historical events in the formation of the Slovenian state, a corresponding public holiday has been established since 2005, which, however, is not a non-working day.
