The Ascension of Mary
Description:
In 1950, the Pope proclaimed religious truth: “When the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the eternal Virgin Mary, completed her earthly life, she ascended body and soul to the glory of heaven.” Since then, this dogma has come into force in the Roman Catholic Church, although belief in the ascension of Mary was very common in many other Christian churches.
So, in the Orthodox Church, including in the Russian, the memory of the miraculous ascension of Mary’s body after the end of earthly life is also celebrated on August 15 (in the old style – August 28 in the new style) and is called “The Assumption of the Virgin”.
Since 1992, the Ascension of Mary in Slovenia has been a non-working day. Christians of Slovenia on this day make pilgrimages to Brezhje-on-Gorensk, to the Ptujska Mountain, the Holy Mountain above Gorica.
Those who are more religious go to the Adriatic coast, not only Slovenian, but also on the coast of neighboring Croatia and Italy. In good weather, the flow of going to the sea, and then respectively from the sea, can even create traffic jams on the roads.
