Piran – the pearl of the Slovenian Adriatic
Description:
Piran is a medieval town with narrow streets, tiled roofs, excellent fish restaurants and delicious ice cream. (What about ice cream?)
Above the town stands the Baroque Cathedral of St. St. George with the highest bell tower on the Slovenian coast, on top of which offers a unique view of the sea and the Alps at the same time, to three countries. After wandering through the cute cobbled streets, we will also visit the ancient monastery with the St. George Cathedral.
Francis, the former private chapel of a noble resident of Piran, will look for the preserved city gates and climb the fortress walls of Piran. After lunch (and mandatory ice cream:) we will visit the salt plants located near the city. Piran salt plants are the most northern on the Adriatic, where natural salt of perfect white color (rare!) is still extracted by ancient, traditional methods!
Sea salt was a strategic commodity, it was used as a means of payment - even in the days of the Venetian Republic, salt was valued by its weight in gold! But the local salt pools are important not only for salt - unique natural conditions are created here for many species of animals and birds that nest in the park in the warm months, and some of them winter here.
