Town Hall Square

Old Town, Maribor

Description:

The town hall, though, is quite small. But it is the main city square. Located in the old part of town. It got its name thanks to the Town Hall, which is nearby. The town hall dates from 1515 and was considered the center of commercial life. Trade was conducted on the square, important deals were concluded. In the Middle Ages, it was a frontal place where people were executed. In the 19th century, it was renamed into Flour, since during this period merchants actively traded flour. Today the square is a pedestrian zone, a favorite place for walking locals and tourists. Wedding motorcades are happy to stop here for a photo shoot. Nowadays there is also an eco-market where you can buy fresh products for proper nutrition. In the center of the square stands the Plague Column as a symbol of the victory of citizens over the plague epidemic in the Middle Ages. You can get there by city bus, taxi, rented car or bicycle or on foot.
