Ptuj

Excursion to the Old Town of Ptuy

Description:

Visit the Ptuj Castle, which was designed first to withstand the constant threat of Hungarian invasion, and later to guard against Turkish raids.

Since 1945, the ancient fortress houses a city museum, which has a reputation as the best historical museum in Slovenia. Its collections include extensive collections of musical instruments, furniture, carpets and tapestries, weapons and instruments of torture in the Middle Ages, an exposition of carnival masks and costumes of the annual traditional Ptuysk Carnival and other artistic and historical values. The castle has almost completely preserved the medieval atmosphere of the time of its last owners. From the castle hill we will start our tour.

We will explore the well-preserved castle with museum exhibits, going down to see the Minorite monastery, founded in 1239. Along the street with beautiful old houses, we reach the City Square with the Town Hall and the Florian Column. On the Slovenian square with the city tower we will see the pride of the city - the Roman monument to Orpheus in marble 5 meters high, built in the 2nd century AD in honor of the honorary citizen of the city Marcus Aurelius. Behind the city wall is the parish church of St. George with a rare gilded figure of St. George from the 14th century. After exploring the temple, we will see a number of ancient buildings from the 8-14 centuries. We will finish the tour in the Ptuja wine cellars with wine tasting from Slovene Gorica.
