Juba River
Description:
The Juba River flows in southern Somalia, on the territory of the autonomous formation of Jubaland. The source of the river is on the border with Ethiopia, and the total length is 1,600 kilometers. From the source Juba flows almost strictly to the south, where it flows into the Indian Ocean near the city of Kismayo.
The territory of the Juba basin is mainly represented by the savannah. Fertile land and high rainfall contribute to the development of agriculture in the region. The fauna of coastal areas is represented by populations of giraffe, buffalo, hippopotamus, gazelle. This is the traditional habitat of wild donkeys. From predators you can meet a leopard, lion, cheetah.
For Europeans, the river and surrounding areas were discovered by Jesuit monk Jeronimo Lubu, who made a trip to these lands in 1624. The river gave its name to both the historical region of Jubaland, the administrative status of which is currently not fully defined, and the regions of the state of Somalia located on its territory - Middle Juba and Lower Juba.
