The Webi Shebeli River
Description:
The Webi Shebeli River originates in Ethiopia and then flows through Somalia. On the stretch from the Ethiopian highlands to the area of the city of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, the river is full of water.
Turning after Mogadishu parallel to the Indian Ocean, Webi Shebeli practically dries up near the mouth of the Juba River. Every few years, during the heavy rainy season, the waters of Webi Shebeli flow into Juba, and thus reach the Indian Ocean. The length of the river is about 1600 kilometers.
Translated from the Somali language, the name of the river means “leopard river” or “tiger river”.
The river floodplain is represented mainly by savanna. Webi Shabeli has a number of tributaries, some of which also fail to reach it during drought. The largest tributaries are Herrair, Galetti, Wabi, Fafeng. On behalf of the river received their names Somali administrative-territorial units Shabeli Dexe and Lover Shabeli.
