Bon Sequr National Reserve
180, Uninc Baldwin County, AL, USA, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Gulf Shores, AL, USA
Description:
The Bon Sequr National Reserve covers 7,000 acres of wildlife habitat. Bon Secur is a haven for migratory birds nesting on Alabama Beach, sea turtles and endangered mice.
The reserve was established by Congress in 1980 to preserve the coastal ecosystem, protect endangered species, provide entertainment opportunities, and serve as a living laboratory for students and scientists.
In French, Bon Secur means “safe harbor”. A very appropriate name for the shelter for local flora and fauna! The dunes of the Alabama coast are reminiscent of the once-existing Gulf Coast. This unique place is considered one of the 10 natural wonders of Alabama.
Compared to most national reserves, Bon Secur is small and includes five separate protected areas in Baldwin County and Mobile County, Alabama. The fully staffed staff consists of three units, but throughout the year the park is assisted by numerous dedicated volunteers. Each year, the Bon Sequr National Reserve receives more than 100,000 visitors.
More than 370 bird species have been identified by asylum staff during migratory seasons. The largest are usually oscopes and several species of herons. Seven species of hummingbirds were also seen. Mammals such as the red fox, American wolves and armadillos are also present.
