Fool's Day
Description:
But in America, unlike in the rest of the world, the media must warn that they are joking.
For example, for a year in a row, the honor of being called the first fool of the country is awarded to Michael Jackson. It has become a tradition that the top US officials are among the top three fools. Among them, from year to year, the name of US President George W. Bush appears in different positions.
There are also more large-scale April Fools pranks and hoaxes that were conducted through the media.
Vermont, for example, became the center of attention of all Americans on April 1, 2001. Throughout the day, Jason Aldos, a spokesman for the Vermont Department of Agriculture, was on television, reporting the first reported outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease on a Vermont farm. In some cities in Vermont and Massachusetts, people stopped buying meat, and some meat shops closed.
Another example. For cigarette dealers, April 1 was a very successful day: their goods were bought up in blocks. The American Legacy Foundation’s promotional video, in the style of a standard U.S. recall announcement, spoke of “an immediate recall of all brands of cigarettes, which will remain in effect until the industry creates cigarettes that do not cause any negative health effects.” After a pause, the female voice added, "April 1 - I don't believe anyone."
Either many smokers did not listen to the announcement, or simply did not pay attention to the last sentence, or did not know that the American Legacy Foundation is one of the many anti-tobacco organizations in the United States.
