Miles Glacier Bridge

National Forest Development Road S-851, Chagch National Reserve, Cordova, AK 99574

Description:

The Miles Glacier Bridge, also known as the Million Dollar, was built across the Copper River, near Cordoba, in 1910. For a long time it was used as a railway bridge to transport copper from Kennicott. In an earthquake in 1964, one of its spans slipped off its base and fell into the river.

After the reconstruction, the bridge is a structure of steel and concrete, consisting of four spans installed on powerful piers. The length of its two-lane road is 470 meters. Automatic traffic tracking cameras are installed on air platforms.

The bridge becomes extremely popular at the end of August, with the opening of the salmon fishing season. Fishing enthusiasts from all over the country come here. Near the bridge there is an excellent campground for tourists.

The bridge offers a picturesque panorama of mountain peaks, shrouded in light fog, representing one of the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska.
