Augustine Volcano

Tractor Trail, southeast of Homer, Alaska, USA

Description:

Augustine volcano is the youngest and most active of the volcanoes of the Aleutian arc of eastern Alaska. It is located on Augustine Island, in the southwest of Cook Bay, about 280 kilometers from Anchorage. The volcano began to form from 25 to 40 thousand years ago, its crater is at an altitude of 1260 meters above sea level. It makes up most of the uninhabited island, which stretches from north to south for 10 kilometers, and from west to east for 12 kilometers, and consists mainly of volcanic deposits.

The dome of the volcano consists of a complex of floors through which flows of hot lava erupt. Volcanic eruptions are usually accompanied by strong earthquakes and tsunami formation. The last eruption of Augustine, accompanied by severe destruction, occurred in 2006, resulting in a collapse in the northwest of the island. The Alaska Volcanic Observatory studies the activity of the volcano and forecasts subsequent eruptions.
