Katmai volcano
Description:
The active volcano Katmai, part of the Aleutian Range of the Alaskan Peninsula, is the main attraction of the national park of the same name.
The volcano is quite high with steep slopes. Its height is 2047 meters, and the diameter is more than 10 km. An interesting fact is that on the northeastern side of the active volcano, the glacier “feels” perfectly.
In 1912, there was a very strong eruption of Katmaya. The incredible roar was heard even at a distance of 1,200 km, and small tremors were felt 200 km from the volcano.
As a result of the eruption-explosion on the top of Katmai, a caldera was formed, which was filled with precipitation. The resulting murky green volcanic lake has been closely studied by scientists. In the middle of the lake there is a small island in the form of a crescent moon.
The western slope, unlike the eastern glacial, is very hot and is called the valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. It used to be a beautiful pine forest, but the eruption destroyed it, and the earth turned into fountains of hot vapors and gases.
