Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England

514 Parker Street, Boston MA 02120

Description:

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England was built in 1923 in Boston. The building is made in Byzantine architectural style with a large central dome and four smaller domes. A tall colonnade adorns the facade of the temple, emphasizing Greek motifs. Since 1950 several different artists have decorated the interiors of the cathedral with Byzantine iconography. Colored stained glass windows, which date back to 1943, and large crystal chandeliers contribute to the visual perception of the grandeur of the temple.

The cathedral is one of the oldest Orthodox parishes in the United States, so it is sometimes called the “Mother Church.” Here is the residence of the Metropolitan of New England - Bishop Methodius.

In 1988, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral was listed in the National Register of Historic Places of the United States.

Divine services in the cathedral are held every Sunday and on the days of sacred holidays. At the cathedral there is a Greek school, a Sunday Orthodox school, a youth association and a bishops’ choir.
