Fort of Independence
2080 William J Day Boulevard, Boston, MA 02127, USA
Description:
Fort of Independence is the eighth fortification built during the existence of fortifications on this site. The owner of this building was the owner of the entire coast. The history of the fort dates back to 1634, when the first fortress was built. This happened 15 years after the first settlers arrived. Having such an important strategic importance, the fort was repeatedly destroyed, and then rebuilt. The years of its construction are considered to be the period from 1834 to 1851.
The fort often served as a prison. Among the notable prisoners was Pierre Masonna dit Baptiste, who was held there from 1702 to 1706.
Now it is a pleasant place in all respects for a full rest. Fresh sea air and beautiful views will not leave anyone indifferent. Most of the building is covered with rocky soil. The fort is connected to southern Boston by a wooden bridge. The fortress itself is located three miles from Boston Harbor.
The fort is now included in the Register of Historic Places. Currently, free tours of the Fort of Independence are held for tourists. The fort and the historical park around it is a great place for walking, jogging and quiet pastime. The best time to visit the fort is from May to September, as it works from dawn to dusk.
