Old Southern Church
645 Boylston St, Boston, Massachusetts 02116, USA
Description:
The Old South Church in Copley Square in Boston is a colorful example of Italian Gothic architecture. The building was built in 1874 from stone mined in Roxbury quarries. Gray stonework is decorated with brown and pink layers of natural stone. The temple is distinguished by its bell tower, 74 meters high, which is visible from several areas of Boston. Copper domes, green with time and old round windows-lanterns are inspired by the architectural solutions of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. The interiors are decorated with decorative wood and stone carvings, colored stained glass windows. The ancient organ, musical ensembles and choirs make visiting the church an unforgettable spiritual holiday.
In 1970, the Old Southern Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The temple is home to one of the oldest religious communities in the United States, the United Church of Christ in Boston, which has been in operation for 330 years.
