St. Michael's Church
1633 N Cleneland Ave, Chicago, IL, USA
Description:
St. Michael’s Church is located in Old City, Chicago. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Church. The parishioners are mostly German Catholic immigrants. It was for them that the temple was originally built, which was used as a refuge. While most of the Old Town’s buildings were wooden, St. Michael’s Church was built of brick. This helped the building to withstand the great fire of 1871, although it was badly damaged.
The church was restored in a very short time. And when the program for the expansion and renewal of the Old Town began, the Church of St. Michael, like many other buildings in the district, took advantage of the program. However, as a result of long work, most parishioners were forced to leave for other churches.
During the construction, the altar of the church was illuminated by 2,000 light bulbs, later removed and left only two. The walls inside the church are decorated with stained glass windows in gold, dark red and green, the ceiling is painted in sky blue tones.
