Lincoln Park greenhouse

IL 60614, Chicago, 2391 North Stockton Drive

Description:

The Lincoln Park greenhouse is a great place to relax and get acquainted with exotic plants. A tropical corner in the center of a large city all year round welcomes guests with lush green leaves and bright colors of flowers.

At the beginning of the XIX century, the fashion for winter gardens and greenhouses covered both European cities and cities of the New World. Moreover, the development of technologies for assembling iron and glass into a single design gave new opportunities in creating greenhouse pavilions. Starting in 1870, there was a small greenhouse in Lincoln Park, but the collection of plants was constantly replenished, and they were already cramped under one roof. The current pavilion was built between 1890 and 1895 by architects Silsby and Bell. They managed to create a room not boring flat shapes, but with soft curved lines, which can be mistaken for a fabulous oriental palace.

The exhibition is thematically divided into four sections. In the first there are numerous species of palm trees, in the second - the amazing world of ferns, in the third - the magical kingdom of orchids, and the fourth provides its areas for seasonal flower exhibitions. The principle of plant collection is to select the most interesting and beautiful natural forms, and then combine them into a natural composition. Thus, the workers of the greenhouse were able to create a real paradise garden under glass.
