Monument in Hild Square
E Upper Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60601, USA
Description:
The monument in Hild Square does not have its own name - it is known by its location. The sculptural group depicts three true patriots of America, thanks to the efforts of which a democratic state was built: George Washington, Robert Morris and Chaim Salomon.
If everyone knows about George Washington, the other two historical figures are less well known. Nevertheless, these are the people whose financial support helped bring about the American Revolution. Chaim Salomon, a Polish Jew, financed the government with his own money and financed the army. He did not even expect to return his investment. Having given up all his considerable savings, he died bankrupt.
The purpose of the monument was the desire of Chicago civil society to end anti-Semitism, illustrating the historical fact that people of all nationalities took part in the founding and construction of the American state. The first sketches suggested the presence of only two figures, but Morris’s financial contribution was so significant that his figure was honored to stand next to Washington.
The monument was designed by sculptor Lorado Taft. It was his last job. Completed the creation of the bronze monument Leonard Krunnel. The monument was opened on December 19, 1941.
