Adler Planetarium and the Astronomical Museum
1300 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605
Description:
The Adler Planetarium is the first planetarium built outside Europe. Its building, created in 1930, is recognized as a national historical monument of the United States. Today the planetarium gives its guests the opportunity of an amazing interactive space travel.
To enter the Heavenly Space Theatre, visitors must pass through an unusual gallery. Its walls are a kind of dynamic composition, in which bizarre planes are created with the help of many aluminum pipes and polyester fabric. The authors of the project invite visitors to imagine moving through space-time slices, marked by LED illumination and unusual sound design. Directly in the dome cinema you can see the most technologically advanced space show ever developed in the world. Viewers feel like passengers of an interplanetary ship rushing through the universe. The clarity of the image exceeds the usual 5 times, which creates a complete sense of reality. During the “flight” you can see the explosion of a star, a “black hole”, a connection of galaxies. To create this effect, 86 computers and 23 digital projectors work simultaneously.
In addition to the Heavenly Theater, there are more familiar expositions in the planetarium. For example, there are ancient astronomical instruments, starting from the XII century. Recently, a bust of Yuri Gagarin has been installed at the entrance to the museum part of the planetarium in recognition of the merits of Soviet cosmonautics.
