Punalu Black Beach

Hawaiian Islands, Punalu Island

Description:

Black Sand Beach is the most famous beach of the Hawaiian Islands. This is a unique place to enjoy the beauty and natural scenery, as well as a fantastic opportunity to see and observe the life of large turtles at your arm’s length.

The beach, covered with unusual black sand, excites the imagination of any tourist. Such an unusual color is the merit of local volcanoes spewing lava, which falls into the ocean waters and splashes on the shore with basaltic crumb. On the beach you can walk, sunbathe, but for swimming there is not too warm water, thanks to springs with cold fresh water under the ocean.

But here you can take great pictures, touch the unique sand with your hands and build black cakes. Taking it off the beach is strictly forbidden. You can’t touch the local slow-moving turtles, which are protected by the state, and just touching them can turn into problems with state laws. Aborigines believe that those who disobey and take the turtle in their arms, will fall upon the wrath of the local volcanic goddess Pele.
