Fort Ross State Historic Park

19005 Coast Highway One, Jenner, CA 95450, USA

Description:

Fort Ross is located on the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Russian River. It is a national park, which houses a preserved residential building and a reconstructed wooden fortress of Russian settlers who arrived here in 1812.

The fort was founded in northern California by a Russian-American company to mine and trade fur. It was the southernmost Russian settlement in America. The walls of the fort were built of solid logs, with watchtowers at the corners, following the example of the Russian Kremlin. In 1841, the fort and surrounding lands were sold to a Mexican citizen, landowner John Sutter.

On the territory of the fort, the only house that belonged to the last Russian commandant Alexander Rotchev remained. All other buildings are reconstructed according to ancient drawings and drawings. The museum is open only on weekends.
