Description:
The largest park in Los Angeles is called Griffith Park. Its area is 1,722 hectares, so it is often called Central Park.
Griffith Park is located in Los Feliz, in the east of the Santa Monica Mountains. It includes a botanical garden, a zoo, rides, a Greek amphitheatre, museums, oak groves designed for horseback riding, hiking trails and 4 golf courses. The Griffith Observatory also operates here. The most famous inscription in the world "Hollywood" is located just outside the fence of the park. This place is one of the most closely guarded sites in the city.
The park owes its existence to Griffith Jenkins of Wales. As a teenager, he came to America and invested heavily in the mining industry. In 1882, he purchased the Los Feliz Ranch. One day he decided that because Los Angeles was a great city, he needed a good park. On December 16, 1896, he allocated 3,015 acres of his land to the city, on the condition that a public park be built there. He thanked the place where he flourished.
In 1915, in Griffith Park, scenes of the film “The Birth of a Nation” were filmed, after which many films were shot here. The park has become a favorite place for tourists from all over the world and locals.
