Hirst Castle

750 Hearst Castle Rd, San Simeon, CA 93452

Description:

Hirst Castle, located near the small town of San Simeon, is one of the brightest historical monuments in California. Construction of the estate began in 1919 and lasted almost 30 years. The result of this long process was the appearance of an amazing picturesque architectural complex. To create this splendor and its arrangement, the owner spent huge funds. The complex includes five huge buildings, each of which has its own name, and the estate is called "La Cuesta Incantada", translated as "Enchanted Mountain". And don’t be surprised by the Spanish names, because 200 years ago California was a Spanish colony.

The owner of the estate, the famous newspaper magnate William Randolph Hirst was not only a very wealthy man, but also a very creative and enthusiastic personality. He owned several news services, 26 newspapers, 13 major magazines, and 8 radio stations. In addition, Hirst created about 100 feature films, was a passionate collector of antiques.

Hearst chose the place for the construction of his castle not by chance. He was guided by sentimental feelings: his father had acquired land in the area in 1865 and, as a child, the future media mogul lived here in tents. Each of the buildings of the estate outside and inside is decorated with objects from the luxurious collections of Hearst: sculptures, paintings, luxurious tapestries, ceramic products, decorative furniture, antique items.
