Watts Towers
1727 East 107th Street, Los Angeles, California 90002
Description:
Watts Towers is a monument to a lonely man. Insanely bored Simon Rodia built these structures for 33 years, from 1921 to 1954, from scrap metal, plastic, sea shells, broken porcelain, empty glass bottles and other garbage.
These towers are located in the same area of Los Angeles. These are 17 buildings, the height of which reaches 30 meters. They were built spontaneously, because their creator had no idea about construction. Despite everything, the towers adorn the city to this day.
It all started with Simon's divorce. After the departure of his beloved wife, the whole family turned away from him, he could not see his own children. Therefore, the construction of towers became the meaning of his life.
Watts Towers is an intricately woven structure consisting of reinforcements and steel pipes. The whole building is decorated with pieces of multi-colored porcelain, tiles and glass. During World War II, some thought that these were not simple towers, but antennas that conveyed very important information to the Japanese government. The people around Simon were too insistent, so he was forced to leave the city and leave the structure unfinished.
Today, Watts Towers is no longer an incomprehensible work of a loner, but one of the symbols of Los Angeles, which since 1990 has been listed as a National Historic Monument.
