Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge

Commodore Schuyler F. Helm Bridge, Wilmington, CA 90744, USA

Description:

On January 10, 1948, the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge opened in Los Angeles. It became the largest vertical lift bridge on the entire West Coast. The hull of the bridge is a mesh structure that makes the structure relatively easy to lift, allowing ships to pass under it.

The Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge connects Routes 47 and 103. It is widely used by truck drivers in order to bypass the crowded Interstate Highway 710, and therefore it quickly wears out. In 1997, the body was completely replaced and updated, but today its condition is quite worn out.

The bridge was designed by engineer Henry Wilson. At the initiative of the California Department of Transportation, eight experimental reinforced polymer panels were installed on the bridge. The design was endowed with sensors to check the voltage, bearing load and temperature fluctuations of the panels.

The bridge has been filmed several times, for example, in the credits of the popular American television series Mannix.
