The Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels

555 West Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Description:

In 2002, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels was built in Los Angeles. It became the main Catholic cathedral in the city. The need for this building arose when the Cathedral of St. Viviana was destroyed by an earthquake in 1994.

The architect was the Spaniard Rafael Moneo, he used in his creation elements of postmodern architecture. He absolutely deprived the building of right angles, endowing it with only dull ones.

The length of the cathedral is 101 meters, the height is about 30 meters. Here you can see the mausoleum, where there are crypts and niches for burial. In the cathedral, actor Gregory Peck was buried. Near the mausoleum is a chapel with the tomb of St. Vivian. There is a small square in the yard. It contains animal sculptures from biblical stories.

The building accommodates more than 3,000 parishioners. At the entrance, not far from the bronze doors, on which the silhouettes of the saints are engraved, stands a statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside the cathedral are John Nava tapestries, and nearby live orchids bloom. Long bronze chandeliers hang from the ceiling, with speakers built into them. The organ located in the temple reaches 18 meters in height. Some of the windows of the cathedral are decorated with stained glass from the Cathedral of St. Viviana, and some with beautiful guardian angels.

The budget of the building turned out to be far from small, which immediately criticized the temple, not only for its high cost, but also for a deviation from the architecture characteristic of California.
