Harvard University
Harvard Yard, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
Description:
Harvard University is the oldest private university in the United States. It was founded on September 8, 1636, just 16 years after the first colonists came ashore in North America. The history of Harvard University began when the Massachusetts Settlement Supreme Court decided to establish the college.
The name was given in honor of the first patron - the young minister John Harvard, who bequeathed to the college after his death half of his estate and an extensive library. This library became the second after the library of the Jesuit monastery, a public library, on the American continent.
The college acquired the status of a university in the first quarter of the XIX century, when medicine and law were added to the list of studied disciplines in addition to studying the Bible, languages and mathematics. The modern university has several museums, including botanical and zoological museums, separate collections devoted to geology and mineralogy, archaeology and ethnology. The scientific library of the university is perhaps the largest in the world, and the achievements of research laboratories are famous all over the world.
There are 18,000 students studying at Harvard University, and another 10,000 attend numerous Harvard schools. Graduates of this oldest university in the United States are several presidents of the United States, as well as many famous politicians and scholars.
