Biscayne National Park

Islandia, Florida, USA

Description:

Biscayne National Park was founded by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. In 1980, it was transformed into a national park, and its borders were significantly expanded. The 700-square-kilometer park is located south of Miami and mainly covers the Bay of Biscay.

The park’s waterlands make up 95% of its area, with the rest being historic coastal mangrove forests. The park's largest island, Elliot Key, is considered the first in the Florida Keys Islands system, forming the third largest coral reef in the world. The island was discovered in 1513, and 170 years ago a lighthouse was built on the island, which now points the way to ships.

One of the attractions of the park is a group of wooden huts on stilts standing in shallow water - the village of Stiltville. These huts appeared in the late 20s - early 30s of the last century. These huts were built during the ban on gambling. Here, players could get beer and crayfish - small lobsters, which were mined directly from under the huts. From crayfish prepared the famous cancer soup, which was called "chilau".

Entertainment in the park will satisfy fans of outdoor activities - masked swimming, diving, fishing, camping, picnics and walking along Spit Highway - a trail that is a kind of tunnel through the rainforest.
