Haulover Beach Park
10800 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour, FL 33154
Description:
Haulover Beach Park is located in shallow water, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. It covers 40 hectares of land, most of which are amazing sandy beaches, divided into two zones: an ordinary beach and a nudist beach, occupying 2.5 km of coastline.
Construction of the park began in 1941, but was immediately suspended due to financial problems associated with the outbreak of World War II. Work resumed in 1945, and two years later the park was opened to the public.
In July 1991, several people settled at the northern end of the beach and designated the site as a tanning and unclothed bathing area. From 1991 to 2004, car parking revenues in the nudist beach area alone increased by 445%. Studies have shown that 50% of the visitors to the beach are tourists. The location of the nudist beach was officially approved by the Miami-Dade County Government in 1993. Today, this beach is visited by up to 7,000 people a day.
In the park there is a large marina with yachts, pleasure boats and fishing schooners. From here begins the Haulover Bridge, connecting the park with the city of Bel Harbour. It is in this place that the ocean goes inland and spills along to the south and north in the form of oceanic channels and bays.
