Hoover Dam

Nevada 172, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boulder City, NV 89005, United States of America

Description:

The Hoover Dam, erected during the height of the Great Depression of the 1930s, became the greatest engineering structure of the era and the largest dam in the world. More than 20 thousand people worked enthusiastically on its construction, because during the severe economic crisis it was the only opportunity to earn money. And still today, the Hoover Dam - one of the greatest buildings of the twentieth century - arouses the admiration and interest of millions of tourists from all over the world.

The author of the idea of building a dam to provide water to Southern California was Herbert Hoover, who at that time held the post of US Secretary of Commerce. After much consultation, a plan was developed to build a dam that would block the course of the Colorado River.

In 1928, the project was approved by the President. Boulder Canyon was chosen as the original site, but after being elected president, Hoover changed the original plan and decided to start construction at the Black Canyon. In 1947, the dam received a new name in honor of one of the main inspirers of the project of its creation and became known as the Hoover Dam.
